April 19, 2016 (Baltimore, MD) – The Pyramid Model Consortium (PMC) and Paul H. Brookes Publishing Co., Inc. have announced a new strategic alliance to support children’s healthy social-emotional development. PMC is the leading nonprofit organization dedicated to furthering the proven framework known as the Pyramid Model for Supporting Social Emotional Competence in Infants and Young Children. Brookes Publishing is highly respected for its early childhood books, assessments, and intervention tools. The two organizations will collaborate to expand access to the Pyramid Model and further develop and distribute resources and products based on PMC’s work. Together, PMC and Brookes will help ensure that teachers and families have the tools they need to provide a nurturing environment for young children’s healthy development.

Both PMC and Brookes are committed to helping educators improve the social-emotional competence of young children and reduce behavioral challenges. Research has shown that children’s emotional and behavioral adjustment is a critical part of early school success—but according to the National Academy of Sciences, only 40% have the social-emotional skills needed to succeed in kindergarten. (Research Synthesis on Screening and Assessing Social-Emotional Competence, Vanderbilt University). The Pyramid Model addresses this gap with a framework of evidence-based practices for promoting social-emotional competence and preventing and addressing challenging behavior. Developed by nationally recognized researchers and program developers in the areas of social skills and challenging behavior, the model has become one of the most widely-adopted approaches for improving outcomes. Highly regarded for its strong evaluation data, the Pyramid Model uses a tiered approach to supports and an extensive network of coaches and training resources that help states, communities, and programs successfully implement changes.

“Collaborating with Brookes is a pivotal step in expanding access to the Pyramid Model,” said Rob Corso, Executive Director, Pyramid Model Consortium. “Their long history of successful publishing in early childhood makes them ideal partners to help us widen our reach and bring more resources and training to educators across the country.”

“Supporting the work of the Pyramid Model Consortium fits so well with our company-wide commitment to help all children reach their potential,” said Melissa Behm, Executive Vice President, Brookes Publishing. “We know the fine work of the PMC founders and are proud to join with them in furthering their important role in helping all young children understand and express their emotions, develop social relationships, and be prepared to succeed.”

PMC provides training and technical assistance activities that support the high fidelity implementation of the Pyramid Model within early childhood early intervention programs.Their new alliance with Brookes Publishing is a natural fit, since Brookes publishes many of the leading tools used to support children’s developmental and behavioral health, including Ages & Stages Questionnaires®: Social-Emotional, 2nd edition (ASQ:SE-2™) and Teaching Pyramid Observation Tool for Preschool Classrooms (TPOT™). Brookes and PMC will combine their strengths and expertise to ensure that educators have the high-quality resources and training needed to expand the Pyramid Model.
