Laurie Martin recognizes the importance of choice within the context of Action and Expression. This helps her ensure that her eighth-grade students can fully demonstrate their knowledge. By giving them a variety of ways they can demonstrate their knowledge, Laurie creates an environment where the students have to select the method with which they feel most comfortable and confident. Through these actions she is helping them become more strategic in their decision making. She notes, “if I’m telling them, ‘you have to do this,’ it’s not going to be as much fun or it’s not going to be as meaningful to them as if they have some choice, so I always like to give them choice.”
