TRANSFER AND GENERALIZATION: JULIE CALFEE AND STUDENT ENGAGEMENT

 

One way Julie Calfee scaffolds her high school English lessons is to use graphic organizers. She uses them to structure her students’ learning both in class and when they are doing their homework. Because her students receive guided practice during class on how to use the graphic organizers, they are able to organize their thoughts using that same format at home. Her desire is to provide the students with enough consistency and patterns in learning that they can transfer those skills from environment to environment and from assignment to assignment.
