Baltimore, Maryland (August 2014) – The ASQ−Brookes Publishing International Research Committee convenes an inaugural event, ASQ AROUND THE WORLD: An Invitational Symposium of International ASQ Researchers, in September. Held in San Francisco, California on September 4–5, 2014, the symposium is an opportunity for international researchers and practitioners using ASQ-3™ or ASQ:SE to share their work with fellow colleagues. Invited participants representing work underway in at least 17 countries, including Australia, Brazil, Chile, China, Denmark, Georgia, Haiti, Kuwait, Thailand, the United States, and Vietnam, will participate in discussion about the research and science behind the international use of the two screening tools.
Research on numerous translations of ASQ-3 and ASQ:SE, including Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, French, Hmong, Vietnamese, Portuguese, and Somali, will be presented via lectures, panel discussions, and posters. Presentations will also cover research on validity and reliability in countries other than the United States and ongoing norming studies for international populations. An expansive poster session will cover emerging research and also highlight new tools in the ASQ family—the ASQ:Inventory, a combined tool for screening and goal development currently in the pilot stage; the Environmental Screening Questionnaire for screening the home environment, which will be released as a free research version in Fall 2014; and the Social-Emotional Assessment/Evaluation Measure (SEAM), an assessment tool published by Brookes Publishing in May 2014.
During the two-day symposium, attendees will use their diverse cultures, backgrounds, and experiences to identify solutions for adaptation and translation of ASQ questionnaires and supporting products. Recommendations for handling barriers to developmental-behavioral screening in different cultures will also be shared. Led by the foremost experts in developmental screening, Dr. Jane Squires and Dr. Diane Bricker, the group will work to build a common glossary around screening and related activities to enhance global communication and develop an international research agenda for ASQ. Highlights and outcomes from the symposium, as well as selected presentations and posters, will be available at www.agesandstages.com/around-the-world-showcase after the event.
