Seminar Description
Students of any age can become better readers by acquiring critical decoding and spelling skills. In this workshop, participants will discover an innovative, comprehensive curriculum based on word origin and word structure for teaching decoding and spelling to students from K12. Participants will learn about
- the rationale for explicit decoding/spelling instruction
- the prerequisites for reading acquisition, including phonemic awareness
- the structure of English orthography
- Anglo-Saxon letter-sound correspondences, syllable patterns, and affixes,
- advanced language structures, including Latin and Greek prefixes, suffixes, and roots
To incorporate this knowledge into their reading instruction, participants will also learn practical, multisensory teaching strategies; easy-to-implement activities for individual, small-group, and inclusive classroom settings; and content area connections in literature and social studies. The two-day seminar includes more details and hands-on activities.

| Bonus: Let us know who your participants will be, and Dr. Henry will emphasize the Anglo-Saxon layer of language for primary school teachers or the Latin and Greek layers for upper elementary and secondary school teachers! |
