Seminar Description
This hands-on seminar teaches participants to use the NNNS, the only assessment tool that addresses all domains of infant neurobehavior.
The first day of the three-day training provides an overview of the tool, a brief discussion of the history of the instrument’s development and how it relates to other neurodevelopmental assessments. Participants will observe an NNNS expert administer the exam to an infant. Participants will begin learning to administer the exam and will also discuss clinical uses for the NNNS.
On the following two days, participants will break into small groups of four people or fewer. They will continue to practice administering the exam to healthy full-term newborns. Under the watchful eye of their NNNS instructor, participants will practice
- using the required testing materials,
- administering the items
- observing newborn behaviors during the evaluation, and
- scoring the exam.
After the 3-day introductory session, participants independently practice using the NNNS for a month or more. The NNNS expert then returns to the participants’ site for a 2-day follow-up session. During this time, participants perfect their administration and scoring of the NNNS while testing preterm and substance-exposed newborns. At the completion of the seminar, participants may be certified to administer the NNNS.
