Brookes Publishing is an educational publishing company in Towson, Maryland (just north of Baltimore). Brookes publishes highly respected books and other resources in early childhood, early intervention, inclusive and special education, developmental disabilities, learning disabilities, literacy, communication and language, behavior, and mental health.

Our titles range from graduate level textbooks, professional references, and practical handbooks to curricula, assessment tools, and family guidebooks and DVDs. Position:
Freelance writers for e-newsletters

Description:

Brookes produces four quarterly e-newsletters on topics of interest to our customers (Autism, Early Childhood, K-12 Education, and Developmental Disabilities) and two product newsletters (our bestselling Ages & Stages Questionnaires developmental screener and AEPS assessment system). We are looking for experienced writers to write content for the e-newsletters.

Position:
IT Director

Key duties:

The successful candidate will be a strong technical project manager with previous hands-on programming experience in MS SQL Server (7.0 or 2000, or similar RDBMS) and experience in managing internal teams and vendor relationships. Duties will include:
  • Meeting with client departments and generating project specifications
  • Generating detailed technical specifications for programmer/analysts
  • Managing our current small technical staff who provide programming and hardware/network support to our firm of 60
  • Performing quality assurance reviews and providing staff performance reviews
  • Managing budgets
  • Presenting final outputs to client departments and reviewing with them
  • Following up with client departments to ensure client satisfaction
  • Managing vendor relationships with current and future software vendors, such as:

    o Acumen Book from CyberWolf
    o SQL Server Marketing database
    o Pivotal CRM
    o E-commerce web site
    o Web-mail programs like ConstantContact

  • Drafting RFPs and evaluating vendor proposals for software and services
  • Recruiting additional programmer/analyst(s) to support growing work requirements

Requirements:

This position requires

  • 4-5 years experience with project management and prior experience with information analysis/programming, including working with clients and end users, specifically in providing ad hoc list and MIS support to sales and marketing departments; experience with publishing firms a plus.
  • Senior managerial experience—able to evaluate and prioritize user requests from a business perspective as well as a technical perspective
  • Experience managing projects, budgets and teams of up to 3 programmers/analysts
  • Familiarity/experience with MS SQL Server 2000, 4th Dimension or other DBMS packages
  • Experience with HTML and web-commerce applications/vendors
  • Ability to manage multiple client departments and projects and work under deadline pressure
  • Attention to detail, independent, ability to follow-through
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field (Mathematics, Statistics, etc.)
